The idea of space has become abstract.

The name Madeleine Gallery is directly associated with the patisserie that originally occupied the building. On the day of our first visit, we were told by the owner that the space was a pastry shop before being turned into a gallery. We gained this immediate yet abstract impression of the building’s former purpose on our initial encounter with the structure. While we were looking around, the abandoned cookware seemed to recall the original use of the space. The photographs hung on the wall from the exhibition at that time not only left us with memories that connected the artist and the place but also reminded us of the history of the place. Richly and paradoxically, multiple narratives unfolded in time and space.

'producing space: divergence, convergence, dessert shop' is a site-specific installation that includes sculptures made from ingredients often used in baking, utensils and the raw materials of sculpture. Dispersed throughout the gallery, the installation complements the gallery’s architecture, exploring how ‘space’ is considered a producing site as well as a produced place.

By juxtaposing narratives in space and time, we created a mixed space in the gallery. While the installation invokes discourses surrounding front and back, expansion and reduction, macro and micro, and the sociopolitical situation, we endeavour to imagine and describe how space exists from the minuscule to the cosmic, reflecting on historical stability and fragility, as well as the rise and fall of globalisation.

Through this exhibition, we contemplate perceptions of space and what space can be in the modern world. Space, to us, is atmosphere and perception, the crystallisation of time, the container where things interact, and even the embodiment of culture and politics.
